If you’ve addressed the health and appearance of your teeth and smile, but neglected the rest of your face, you may remain unsatisfied with your overall appearance. Although you may normally think of Botox and dermal fillers as being the sole province of dermatologists and plastic surgeons, Brookline dentists are professionals that are very knowledgeable about head and neck anatomy, as well as administering injections.
In addition to our cosmetic dental treatments, we also offer treatment with Botox and dermal fillers. Besides helping with normal facial aging, Botox and fillers can address situations that tend to occur after bone loss, such as when you have missing teeth.
Missing teeth results in bone loss, which can cause the facial structure to shift inward. This leads to undesirable facial changes and rapid facial aging, including the development of wrinkles around the mouth. Botox and dermal fillers can help address these issues. Learn more below.
Benefits of Botox and Dermal Fillers
- Wrinkle reduction
- Helps chronic migraines
- Fast results

What is Botox?
Botox is an injectable liquid containing a safe botulinum toxin that is first purified in the controlled environment of a laboratory. In addition to its uses for migraine headaches and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), it can be used to treat “dynamic wrinkles.” These are the deep folds and wrinkles that typically appear on the forehead.
It is also commonly used to smooth facial wrinkles around the eyes, such as crow’s feet, and around the lips.
Botox works by temporarily restricting the activity of treated facial muscles to prevent the development of dynamic wrinkles.
What are dermal fillers?
Also known as facial fillers, dermal fillers are an injectable gel or liquid that works somewhat differently than Botox. Instead of affecting facial muscles, fillers “fill in” the area by creating additional facial volume to smooth away fine lines and wrinkles.
Two of the most popular fillers are Juvederm and Restylane. These contain a component called hyaluronic acid, which is naturally present within your body. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can help restore the normal levels of this important skin component. The result is firmer, more hydrated skin that displays fewer lines and wrinkles.
Your Results
After injection, Botox or a dermal filler would eventually be absorbed by your body. In the case of Botox, this is at about the three-month mark. Many dermal fillers offer results lasting up to a year or more, depending upon the individual product. Once the material has been fully metabolized by your body, you would need another treatment session to maintain your wrinkle-reduction results.
